Sophomore forward Dikembe Dixson will miss the rest of the 2016-17 season, per a release on uicflames.com. He tore his ACL early in Wednesday night’s win at DePaul. The release described it as a “non-contact injury”, which will be repaired with surgery.
“I have no doubt that his positive attitude and the relentless support we will give him will help Dikembe come back stronger than ever next season,” Head Coach Steve McClain said in the release.
The Flames (5-5), who were picked to finish second in our preseason HLeagueHoops rankings, still have a talented team that can finish in the league’s upper half. Three of their four remaining leading scores are all freshmen, who keep getting better: Marcus Ottey (11.7 ppg); Tarkus Ferguson (8.5 ppg); Godwin Boahen (7.9 ppg). Also, look for redshirt freshman Dominique Matthews to get more minutes and looks on the offensive end. He got off to an impressive start last season, until an injury cut his campaign short prior to league play beginning. Junior big man Tai Odiase, who is the leading candidate for Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, will also be a huge factor. The Flames also have a very deep bench, as ten players average at least nine minutes per game.
